Glyn Mawr Vineyard 2011!

Welcome back to Glyn Mawr’s Blog for 2011!!  Not that any of us went anywhere…it’s just as our vines went dormant for the winter, so did my updates for the vineyard.  Ahhhh…it feels good to get thinking about the vineyard again for this year and let everyone know about the exciting phases we have planned!

Well, as you can see from these photos, our vineyard is pretty quiet these days as the vines are frozen on the trellis.  The growth from the summer and fall is left on the vines for the winter, and then we will prune them this spring to prepare for the new growth AND our FIRST crop of Glyn Mawr grapes!

Yes, we will be in Year 3, and the third season is when the vine can hold and support the growth of about 1/3 to 1/2 of a normal crop.  We will again estimate what the individual variety and plant will produce, and the pinch off 1/2 or more of the clusters.  That process will allow the vine to make itself stronger for Year 4 when we harvest an entire crop.

As spring hits, it usually causes a wave of anxiety for myself!  There is so much work to be done, along with our other jobs and obligations, that I tend to go into a bit of a panic mode! 🙂  My husband would probably say that was a normal everyday occurrence. 🙂

Nonetheless, my mom has carefully reminded me that at this time last year, we were pruning for the spring AND installing the trellis wire and system.  That is a huge, huge amount of time and labor that we will not have to do this year.  So, I can breathe a sigh of relief…for a second, anyway!

We plan to retain some of our own varieties this harvest to make batches of homemade wine again this fall. That will really be invaluable as we can work with our own grapes.

Hope you enjoy our blog this year!  Stop out at our vineyard anytime you see us out there working.  We’ll be out there sooner rather than later! 🙂

Take care!
